Couples would engrave a lock with their names, lock it on a bridge and throw away the key....signifying that their hearts were 'locked together' forever. Bydgoszcz was the first city where we discovered this tradition...and was where we placed our first lock.
The tourist city of Krakow had a beautiful bridge that spanned the Wisla River....a very popular place for couples in love.
That's where we placed our 2nd lock.
Wroclaw was home to the third bridge we 'locked'. Why so many locks on so many bridges? Because we couldn't pick a favorite to place just one lock on. We loved all the Polish cities we visited...and we traveled to many!
Even our kids were excited about the tradition...Here are two of them that 'locked their hearts' together on the Krakow bridge. (Willis and Avery were on the other side of the bridge!)
Now to the present.....the Manhattan Brooklyn Bridge. The 'lock tradition' has made it's way to America! Placing our lock on the Brooklyn Bridge with the beautiful New York skyline in the distance.
Yes, there are more locks on the bridge than ours...but this tradition is just taking off here in New York. Maybe we'll start a frenzy!
See the locks on the light post? But no one can read them! That's 1/2 the fun!
Throwing the key away...so our lock will never be opened. And yes, I managed to throw it across lanes of traffic and into the East River from here! Where do you think my children and grandchildren get their athletic ability from???
We will be able to 'visit' our lock on this very cool bridge several times before we return home to Las Vegas in September. A fun....but very hot and humid (!!) P-day.
