Subways in New York City

Welcome to the subways of New York City! With 842 miles of track, 468 stations and 34 lines (only 40% of the track is underground!), one has to think that there would be cause for many repairs.
One morning we finally saw some MTA (Metropolitan Transportation Authority) workers doing their job.
How would you like to work around all that garbage that somehow finds itself on the track? And...what do you do when a train comes???
A train is coming in the distance and the workers start to scramble!
So that's what those little doorways in the walls are for! Still...it would scare me to death to have to stand there and watch a speeding subway train go by!
The 1st underground subway opened in NYC on October 27, 1904. The cost of the ride....$.05. Today a regular one-way ticket costs $2.75. The MTA estimates that 1.8 billion people ride the New York subway each year.
With the trash on the tracks, people are not the only ones 'visiting' the subways....
Does this give you an idea who else does?
Look closely....We've seen a few of these guys running around having a hey-day! These filthy tracks are a rat's paradise!
Inside the cars, all kinds of entertainers will show up looking to earn some spare change. This older man was impressive.....as he blew his trumpet to a catchy tune!
An unusual sight. Yes, we boarded this subway car on the 'E' train coming back from the World Trade Center stop and were the only one's on it for several stops. We felt as if we were in a movie where everyone had been told to evacuate the city....and we had not gotten the memo! Every day on the subway is a new experience...but it is the ONLY way to move 8+ million people around this city!
